Sentence case in Excel

There’s no function to change the contents of a cell to Sentence case in excel. You can change everything to UPPER CASE, lower case and even Proper Or Title Case.

Sentence case is where only the first letter is capitalised in a sentence.

The straightforward way of doing this is to make the cell all lower case, then replace the first character of the string with an upper case character.

=REPLACE(LOWER(A1),1,1,(UPPER(LEFT(A1,1))))

NOTE: this will remove any capitalisation from Proper nouns. And it doesn’t account for multiple sentences.

In my case, the cell has some capitalisation for places and surnames, but otherwise everything is lower case. And I only have one sentence. So I don’t need to make everything lower case.

=REPLACE(A1,1,1,(UPPER(LEFT(A1,1))))

As easy as that!
